If you enjoy creating the stuff, have at. If the folks you send it to enjoy getting it, so much the better.
My argument is with the folks who don't discriminate and think

should) enjoy their attempts at creativity. I mentally consign them to the same circle of hell I reserve for folks who think that using lots of fonts in a document constitutes "design". Er, I've
been a designer/production guy, Not so...
And thinking about it, the groups you refer to sound like electronic equivalents of various crafting gatherings I'm familiar with. My SO, for example, knits and crochets, and is usually found in a knitting circle when we are with groups of like minded people. Those circles are generally female, too.
As long as everybody involved likes doing it, all is well.
