As someone above said, I feel that people that back in are "on the lamb" and planning for a quick getaway.

I'm usually one of the first to arrive and thus have all space to put my car exactly so that I only have to drive backwards in a straight line... Using the empty parking spaces across the one I plan to use.
If I park for shopping, I always put the boot of the car towards the most space (in most cases, towards the road

) for easy loading.
