Just reading about this. My sympathies are with you. When I had mine out, they gave me Codeine, which it turned out I was supremely allergic to, and which caused me to go into anaphactic shock. So much fun.
Yes, please be careful with regard to dry socket. It is not a good thing because it keeps the gum from healing properly over the site and can leave you with some serious long term nerve pain.

(Which reminds me, the oral surgeon who removed my wisdom teeth was arrested many years later .... 20 or so years as I recall .... for molesting his patients while they were under anesthesia. That just made me feel all sorts of wonderful.
