yeesh ! poor kiddo ! don't you have eye exercise doctors (here they're called "orthoptiste", i don't know what the name is in english) there ? i had a problem where my inner eye muscles weren't very strong (it wasn't easy for me to look cross-eyed) which made it hard to focus on near things ; i had a few sessions with that doctor who made me do eye exercises and gave me some exercises to do at home. they were a little uncomfortable at first but not painful at all, and i'd rather do that than surgery any day !! after all, they are muscles ; you can exercise them. maybe that could help your granddaughter.
