It seems any global declaration gets added to every single instance of class thereafter, so even though my file only had "nonindent" and "right" as classes, it created a dozen additional classes for i, big, small, sigil_class_not_in_toc for each h-tag etc etc  Disabling font scaling in the conversion helps limit the number, but the global hyphenation declaration (for example) still gets added to every single class--seems Calibre doesn't allow those...

The thing is, when you look at the KF8 with the calibre editor, the editor will update the metadata so it will change what's there. You can turn this off for ePub, but not KF8.
Try the following KF8. I created it with Kindlegen and then used KindleUnpack to split it so I could remove the Mobi. Then I used Hyphenate This! to add in soft hyphens. This one should work. No calibre conversion was involved.
But because you say the other KF8 I posted didn't work, I think you're Kindle may be defective in some way.
