I used to do the same, save a copy to Filtered HTML and convert that to EPUB. As I recall the alternatives, RTF and the third party DOC Input plugin, were both problematic.

When Kovid implemented support for DOCX I switched to it almost immediately because it eliminated the intermediate format.

I see your issue has been fixed in 8.12, but assuming you also keep the DOCX, try converting it to EPUB.
