Paperwhite 12th gen is an MTP device and always has been. Commander One is an MTP client, so it can see what is on there.
Viewing cover thumbnails on the newer MTP Kindles works if you mark side loaded books as PDOC, as calibre cannot access the folder with cover thumbnails. Kindle will create a thumbnail for it.
If they are marked as EBOK, you might be able to get a cover image to download with correct ASIN - but if it is not also in your Kindle library bets are off. I think I tried it awhile back with non-Amazon content, and it does not work.
With pre-MTP Kindles, and the 2022 Scribe, calibre will side load and manage cover images. But it doesn't need to if they are marked as PDOC.
