By 'fix a my fairly large library' I assume you mean via the Restore database feature, or rebuild a library via Add Books from folders. I've been using calibre for well over a decade and I have never needed to do either on any of my libraries.
I have 9 libraries, one has over 170,000 'books', another (my Test library) has 81 custom columns. I also make extensive use of calibre://URL links within and between calibre libraries and with other applications and links to other application objects from within calibre.

In that case, I must be doing something wrong. I don't remember the exact circumstances, but next time it happens, I'll be sure to comeback to see if I can figure it out.

Also, it imported an epub file by itself, after manually importing 400 or so. Without using JobSpy. Weird.
