Device: Kindle Scribe
Kindle DX ( DXG ) in 2025

it is December 2024 and I ordered Kindle DX from eBay.

My goal was to install KoReader on this device.

Because this is very old device there are several hoops one will need to overcome to get this one setup in 2025

My device is B004 version and I did backup the os 2.5.8 and have rootfs.img and update_restore-os.bin available if somebody needs it.

This guide also applies to Kindle 2/dx/dxg

I will not explain every detail of the process, just read READ ME. Objective is to highlight obstacles and summarize resources to get this job done quicker.

update to the latrest FW 2.5.8
https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/custo...MQC26VQQMM8XSW
do not forget to install also update-caupdate-04.bin

Jailbreak
kindle-jailbreak-0.13.N.zip from here https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...ad.php?t=88004
unpack , put it in root derectory and update per README

The JB will fail! U006 , it is normal, your device is JBen

Install MKK ( development certificates )
kindle-mkk-20141129-r18833.tar.xz
from here: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=225030

Enable USBNETWORK ( not needed, you can register and adjust date by updating via BIN files attached )

This method is used to fake REGISTER the device and ADJUST THE DATE.

Both of those steps could be achieved by pre-compiled *.bin file which install from Settings. Unfortunately I was unable to fin precompiled BIN for the fake registration. Precompiled BIN for Date change is available. For the Fake Registration the USB Network setup seems to be neccessary.

USB Network is a solution to access file structure of the Kindle which is hidden from user mode ( when you connect USB to PC ) and change system files such as registration file where you can add your name/email and register the device offline.

First you have to install USBNetwork Hack on your Kindle. Most guides use KUAL/MR Installer which you can not use at this stage. Download this file kindle-usbnetwork-0.57.N-dx.zip from here
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...ad.php?t=88004 and install it from Kindle OS settings menu as JB or MKK. Later, when you enable KUAL you will be able to install USBNetwork hack via KUAL/MR Installer laster if you need to.

Once the hack is installed on Kindle here is a guide how to ENABLE the HACK on Kindle and PC to connect later via telnet.
https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Kin...USB_Networking
I have been using Windows 11. attached is the driver I used kindle_rndis.inf_amd64-v1.0.0.1.zip
the host ip should be 192.168.2.1 and Kindle is 192.168.2.2 NOT 192.168.15.244 as mentioned in the guide ( 2hrs killed )

Then google how to enable telnet in WIndows and use simple Command Promt with "telnet 192.168.2.2'

Register device
easy way:
use attached file "update_reginfo_0.08.rar " and follow instructions for your kindle
it is needed to preserve MKK ( certificates )
harder way using USBNetworking and modifying registration file directly on Kindle
It is a sinple process of creating a file and storing it in specific location ( USB Network is required )
Follow this process just up to step 4. ( Go Brazilian!!! )

Install Kual
Kual is an HomeBrew App interface on Kindle used to launch other apps such as KoReader or MR Installer
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=203326
just place KUAL-KDK-1.0.azw2 into /documents folder and you are done.
optional: Update_KUALBooklet_v2.7.32_install.bin

When you are going to launch KUAL you might get 2 error msg

1. The permission to open file has invalid DATE...
to fix this install setdate_kindle_k2_dx.zip. this will adjust DATE. ( great job by SpartanHeavy )
or use USBNetworking to set date mnanually
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...=334740&page=2

2. The device is not registered as TEST Kindle..
fix by installing MKK, if you get this msg and you have already installed MKK then you have not fake registered your Kindle above.

Finally install KoReader
https://github.com/koreader/koreader
use the legacy version: koreader-kindle-legacy-v2024.11.zip

The KOReader is 2025 app operating on 18 years old CPU. It is not going to be fast as Scribe. But after initial setup of KOReader you are down to turning pages and that works OK.

Enjoy!!!

Thank you SpartanHeavy for your support!
