I have Kobo Libra 2 with the latest (4.38.23171) firmware.

I have come across a forum post from several years ago which states that KSM is the only way to boot directly into one of the readers but it looks like it's deprecated and no longer recommended. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance
You do not want to directly boot into the an alternate reading software. You want Nickel to run first so it can do some initializing of the hardware. Then you can use NickelMenu to go into KOReader or Plato from there. Also, if there is a problem where you crash every time it's run, you'd be in trouble.
