The cover thumbnail shown in the Kindle's library view reflects the current marketing cover for the book and automatically updates to match the latest cover that the publisher has provided for the product listing of the book. It can differ from the cover shown at the beginning of a Kindle book when reading.
In most cases if a publisher updates a Kindle book after publishing those who purchased the book continue to have whatever version was current at the time that they purchased it. In some cases the publisher can convince Amazon to make the change available to previous purchasers. Customers have the option to accept available changes or retain the original version of the book.
If a customer chooses to accept a new version Amazon uses an algorithm to match up equivalent parts of the old and new versions and migrates the location of annotations when possible. However it does not always work perfectly, especially if major changes have been made.
