This fact alone is a good reason to keep an older kindle registered to your account. I was about 1.5 years behind in deDRMing my kindle books. So after reading this thread I went and downloaded about 30-40 books to 'transfer via usb' for an older, still registered kindle. Dropped them into Calibre and it worked just fine.

D&T was also available for an older kindle fire 8 that I have.
