I got a PW1 with 5.6.1.1 and struggled some with jailbraking, hotfixing and installing packages because I'm a noob. So I wrote down how I did it, if somebody else is as new to this as I am.
1. Get "update_kindle_5.3.3.bin" from first post here at
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=264432
2. The follow directions in that first post
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=264432 :
* Download earlier update file from Amazon: Kindle Paperwhite 1 Update 5.3.3
* Disable wifi on your Paperwhite 1 (airplane mode). [HOME] -> [MENU] > Settings -> Aeroplane Mode = On
* Connect your Kindle Paperwhite 1 to your computer (DO NOT DISCONNECT UNTIL LAST STEP!).
* Copy the bin file you downloaded in step 1 to root folder of PW1.
* Wait at least 2 minutes after copy has completed.
* Push and hold power button until your PW1 restarts (the led blinks orange and light turns on at the screen).
* Wait until the PW1 has installed the upgrade (really a downgrade).
* Now you can DISCONNECT from your computer.
NOTE1: Here I did a factory reset (it will remove everything on the device): [HOME] -> [MENU] -> Settings -> [MENU] -> Reset Device
NOTE2: Do not turn on Wifi yet. I did not attach to wifi after resetting.
3. Got and read at
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=186645 and as said there, go to
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=225030 and get "K5 JailBreak (5.0.x - 5.4.4.2)" file | "kindle-jailbreak-1.16.N-r19326.tar.xz"
4. To install the jailbreak, follow directions in
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=186645 in "JailBreak: Spoiler:":
* Download the K5 JailBreak package from the Snapshots thread, and unpack it. In here, you'll find a few files.
Unzip the contents of the kindle-5.4-jailbreak.zip archive to the root directory of your Kindle.
* Now, eject & unplug your Kindle, and go to [HOME] -> [MENU] > Settings -> [MENU] > Update Your Kindle. The updater won't actually ever run, this is normal. After a few seconds, the words **** JAILBREAK **** will appear at the bottom of your screen to confirm that the device is jailbroken . You won't see this message again, it's simply a confirmation message.
NOTE1: Yes, I go **** JAILBREAK **** at the bottom
NOTE2: I now Rebooted the device.
5. Now you may enable wifi again.
6. Use Kindle "normal" way to update to 5.6.1.1 if you want. Enable Wifi and go to [HOME] -> [MENU] > Settings -> [MENU] > Update Your Kindle
NOTE: Mine do not find any upgrade, "Update Your Kindle" is greyed out even if it has been connected to wifi over a day.
7. To get the "JailBreak HotFix", follow the instructions in
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...postcount=1597
* Go to
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=225030 and get "K5 JailBreak Hotfix" file "JailBreak-1.16.N-FW-5.x-hotfix.zip"
8. To install the "JailBreak HotFix", follow the instructions in
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...postcount=1597
* Unpack "JailBreak-1.16.N-FW-5.x-hotfix.zip"
Copy the Update_jailbreak_hotfix_1.16.N_install.bin file to the root directory of your Kindle.
* Now, eject & unplug your Kindle, and go to [HOME] -> [MENU] > Settings -> [MENU] > Update Your Kindle. If the update is successful, you're golden. If it fails, it probably means you weren't properly jailbroken before the update, in which case, you're still screwed.
9. Install MobileRead Package Installer (aka., MRPI) as said here
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=251143
* Got to
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=225030 and get "MR Package Installer" file "kual-mrinstaller-1.7.N-r19303.tar.xz"
* Unpack and copy the folders "extensions" and "mrpackages" to the root of the device
NOTE: How to use, from
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=251143
* It's fairly simple: upload all the update packages you need (in one go) to the mrpackages directory, which you'll find * at the root of your Kindle over USB if you installed this correctly.
* Eject & unplug your Kindle, then click the Install MR Packages button in the KUAL Helper menu.
* Once the installer has done its job, and the UI has been brought up again, while your device should be usable straight away, some hacks may need a full restart to 'take'
10. Go to
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=320564 and start reading under "Installing custom packages." if you want to install more stuff.
