I doubt a Linux VM will do you any good since neither K4PC or K4Mac will run under Linux. I don't know if the BlueStacks Android emulator for Mac will run the version of Android Kindle app mentioned in the DRM workaround: Kindle for Android thread or if the tools used with it to extract the backup file will work.
