If your Fire tablet is new, then it's possible you need a newer version of Calibre. (BTW, a Fire is not a Kindle, and it's not an upgrade from Paperwhite. It's an entirely different device).
As to the Gutenberg book, what format is it? Kindles don't read epubs. If it's epub, convert it to azw3 with Calibre.
