I went through a rather large range of tests, but when some worked most of the books were corrupted, so I also downgraded the firmware thinking that could help which it didn't. My last test though, I tried turning off sleep mode and also power settings so it would just stay on, and after a dozen minutes it just shut itself off without even putting books on it so I think its issue is elsewhere and I'm just going to return it.
No, that shouldn't happen. Some of it could be the firmware issues, but, overall it sounds more like a hardware fault. After you unplug it and turn it on, has the battery charged? Is it retaining a charge? That's more to satisfy my curiosity as I think you should return it.
