I've never owned a Kindle. I use Kindle for PC on a Windows computer to download my books and it works fine.

I use an older version of Windows for PC to avoid KFX format (version 1.17 available here). If you decide to do that, just make sure you immediately (and I mean IMMEDIATELY) adjust the settings or stupid Kindle for PC will automatically download the newer version while you are still trying to sign in.
