Apparently it was even worse in some countries, per Wikipedia: In some countries, the paperback editions were split into two (Germany and the United States), three (France) or four volumes (Italy and Portugal) per book.

I'll bet and the third book in his Nights Dawn trilogy is even longer than it. Wikipedia lists the page count as 976 for Great North Road and 1,174 for The Naked God. Now imagine that in a single paperback book. I managed to find this picture showing a bunch of his books, it's impressive:
