There is no high quality research on what interval is best. But here is the little bit there is now:

Delaying a COVID vaccine’s second dose boosts immune response: Older people who waited 11–12 weeks for their second jab had higher peak antibody levels than did those who waited only 3 weeks

When the U.S. government went along with the tested 3-4 week intervals, there was no scientific evidence as to what interval was best. All that was known was that the test intervals, despite being shorter than what was best with most other vaccines, worked. The vaccines commonly given in the United States were tested with short intervals because lots of people were dying, so it was important to finish testing, of vaccines likely to work, quickly.

A large sample test of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, giving half the current single-dose-shot two times, at a 57 day interval, is ongoing.
