On the contrary - the ability to dim my phone/tablet is one of the huge benefits. I'd much prefer than than having a reading lamp on, or a "book light". Haven't tried the "lcd with lighting" - but I surely do NOT read on a bright phone or tablet screen. That would kill my eyes in a dark room.

Basically, you balance the light with the ambient light for most comfort. In total darkness, I use a nice dark dark green with a slightly brighter yellow font. Very comfortable for me.
