It's because the Kindle isn't prehistoric that Creating Collections in Calibre doesn't work.
I want to clarify that you actually *can* create collections on newer Kindles, you just can't create them using Calibre. You create them either on the device or on the "Content and Devices" page in your Amazon account.

Contrary to Quoth's experience, syncing the collections to multiple Kindles is not broken for me--if I add a book to a collection on my Oasis, it shows up in that collection on my Voyage as soon as I sync. It's true that the cloud collections don't work with books sideloaded over USB, but if you send your books to the Kindle cloud, it works just fine. Of course, cloud collections also work very well with books purchased from Amazon.
