Also, re: lossless compression - in general, running it can paradoxically increase the filesize. If the image is already compressed (ever tried putting a zip file inside another zip file?), or if it's sufficiently complex that the compressor can't efficiently smoosh it down. I think Polish ePub might account for this by not replacing if there's no net reduction, but I'm not 100% on that.
