What I do is download the book to my Kobo Desktop app, and import that file directly to Calibre if there's no DRM, or pull the epub out of ADE (which is why I have an old version of that) if there's DRM. Then I use calibre to sideload to my ereader (which happens to be a Kobo currently but I was previously using an Android eInk device).
That's why I said you don't need to own a Kobo to buy from the Kobo store.

Or you can add the Obok plugin (part of the DeDRM package) to calibre and add DRMed books from the Kobo desktop app to calibre without needing ADE.
