The first title in the series looks to be semi-permanently at $0.99/£0.99, with only brief blips away from that price point, so if you want to try the series, you can start with the first. The links below are still good. Sadly, the second has gone back up in price, but it's still not too bad...

I just noticed that many (most? all?) titles in the Tom Pollard/Gregory Toye series by Elizabeth Lemarchand are available as ebooks, with the first couple of titles attractively priced at $0.99/£0.99. (Per eReaderIQ, the first title was actually briefly free a while back, but I missed it...sigh!)
