The fact that some versions of some distributions does not merit a blanket ban on ever using any repository from any distribution to get calibre.

I've read of plenty of issues caused by botched Calibre repositories. So the solution to Calibre is not to use any repository for anything released to Calibre and just get it from the official Calibre website.
