I would not recommend updating past Kindle for PC 1.24.3. When I updated to 1.2.6.x, there were issues with removing DRM from downloaded files even when render-test.exe was disabled. This may have been fixed in the meantime.

You might want to check the Dealing with Kindle for PC/Mac 1.19 and KFX in calibre which still is the best place to ask this question.
