Because not everyone WANTS auto-updates and that also create$ traffic on the servers run by Kovid.
New Device support and new features are why folk
need to Update.
The rest is optional.
Plus: Glitches happen. Allowing the knowledgeable folk to find the issues (and report), allow emergency corrections or Fixed in next release (you might want to
