I happen to be reading this now and am about 25% in and really enjoying the reading, if not the general direction of current events. Although the focus is on the extinction event now in progress, the prior mass extinctions are also covered.
Once again amazon deal of the day for $3.99

I recently finished this and highly recommend it. I really liked that each chapter was the current plight of a particular group of animals or what caused the extinction of animals thousands of years ago. intermixed was the underlying history of the understanding of evolution and extinction, including comparisons to prior mass extinctions. Much of the author's research included going on expeditions with scientists doing (then) current research.

I think quite a few children would benefit from and enjoy reading this book.
