You don't need the Kobo app for the extended driver, you need Calibre.

Kepubs aren't exactly better than epubs, but they have some features epubs don't. Reading statistics is one of them. On the other hand, epubs have better typography. It's your choice which of them you prefer. Personally, I use epubs, because reading stats aren't important to me.
