From my point of view, collections ceased being useful when the sheer number meant either using search or paging through 60 pages of collections some of which contained hundreds of books (and that was after I went on a bit of a rampage and modified my setup in an attempt to minimize the number of books appearing in multiple collections). I also remember having issues with Kobo's firmware being unhappy with a large number of collections though that was improving in later firmware and ghost collections.

Not to mention that out of the box, I did not see 14 tiles on the home screen and the multiple sizes for them was--to me--annoying. I don't even want to remember that massive search button if anyone wants to bring up a waste of screen space.
