This would work well for those with more modern versions of Word, but I have the 2002 version which came in a Works bundle. It's too old to save to .docx though it can read .docx by converting them into .doc, which is does automatically, but sometimes turns the docx into lots of gobble-de-gook!

It's far easier for me to save as rtf.
