@Koval, can you make a generate cover from existing files? There are instances where I update an epub, azw3, mobi, etc (which have new covers) and I want the new metadata to update the cover from the new file.
In metadata edit, select a format and click the "Set cover..." button (top left). There's an equivalent option in Bulk MDE.

IIRC this has been asked before, more than once, and the response has been 'can't be done/too hard to do' - possibly because of Qt limitations.

You could View and Edit format files (there's a button for each), by opening a CalibreSpy window for the current library - Calibre Spy can be run from the command line via calibre-debug.
