Made the same mistake starting out (thankfully, only on a test library). Instead of using Tag String Replacement, copy your rules to the Tag Rules table (oldtag, newtag, purgetag) and enter False in the purgetag column.

Tag String Replacement only replaces parts of the tag. Tag Rules replaces the entire tag.
