A "portable" generator should be enough to keep a furnace going, and handle things like allowing you to make coffee or cook breakfast. (Induction hot plates are
de rigueur here.) We have a 3.5KVA Yamaha that even has push-button start, and provides clean, sine-wave, power and runs quite quietly. (OTOH, if you're dealing with pure electric heat, the problem is a bit more costly.)
