No, because the firmware excludes the package type used for the factory, production testing, firmware images.
There are other reasons the update handler will delete the update package also.

Look at the first four characters (they are plain text) of the image file if curious about its "package type".
(or use KindleTool's "info" command on them)

This thread you are posting in DOES NOT depend on a downward change in version number running.
It does depend on being able to install a FACTORY USE ONLY image rather than a public customer image.

That is:
The public customer firmware images do not supply the ;installHtml command.
The private, factory use only, firmware does provide that command.
Ah okay, I see. First four characters of the 5.7.4 image I flashed are 'FB02' Does the F mean it was a factory use image?

Reading a few pages back I noticed you refer to 5.7.4 not being safe to downgrade to, as there's been recent reports of bootloops - if I can get a factory use image of 5.8.9.0.1 to stick on my kindle after disconnecting USB, is there a chance I can get a successful flash? Is this just in the territory of 'untested so can't advise you to do it'?

I can see people offering successful results with the PW3, on my firmware just a few pages back, which is adding to my confusion here.

For now, I'll do as advised and wait it out. I'll create the update blocker folder before connecting to WIFI, and ensure I stay on my current firmware until there is a supported jailbreak, or at least more information.

At this point I'm just curious why there seems to be so much contradicting information

It was purchased in December and shipped with 5.8.10.1, and I had already registered the device with Amazon and used it for a couple of weeks before jailbreaking. I followed the directions in the first post, with a few notes:

* Used 5.7.4 for downgrade, since there were no reliable links for 5.8.9.0.1.
* Used the nomax hotfix.
* Updated to 5.8.11 after the jailbreak, at which point the Kindle required me to re-register with Amazon before use. While it was reset and on 5.7.4, it worked without being registered.

The only huiccup I ran into was forgetting to reset before doing the downgrade, then resetting after the downgrade. ;installHtml didn't do anything. After a second downgrade (really a side-grade, since it was from 5.7.4 to 5.7.4), everything ran as expected.

So for anyone in a similar situation, things look promising! Thanks everyone for all the great work done here.
