If you're willing to go the ADB install route, you can install a launcher, Calibre Companion and your favorite reading app(s) without rooting. All those apps will live in the B&N content partition, including any books you transfer to the device with Calibre Companion. Yes, it can be done.
The stock Nook reader will not be able to find these books, though. It looks only in its own folder and in the sideload partition. So, you'll need reader apps to go along with any books you put on by CC.
