It's when the first spurt of hot water from your automatic-drip maker hits the paper filter in just such a way that it "flops over." Thus allowing the grounds free rein to flow under the filter and into the carafe (and ultimately your cup).
  • French Press coffee maker. Been my go-to for years.
  • Kuerig or Keurig (sp?) or one of those pod things;
  • Instant. Never has filter-flop. Surprisingly good instants out there.

Mr. H is nagging me for a Keurig-style pod-people coffee maker. I get the convenience and speed, I do. But my understanding is that the coffee isn't amazing, so...I'll stick with my old-skool French press. It works, and if the computer goes wonky, I don't end up with Earl Gray instead. (Yes, yes, before someone just has to correct me, I know that's not how it works. You understand the point.) Plus, the FP takes up de minimis counter space.
