I've had it happen once when I was homesitting for friends. It turned out it was the upstairs smoke detector. Which was position above the stairs (standing on a stepladder leaning over a steep stairs is not fun) and the thingy you had to press with a screwdriver to open the thing up was turned away from the landing.
