The sorting in calibre sorting is dynamic. When you change the sort, the previous sort is used as the secondary sort. So, if you sort by title, then change to author, you will have the books sorted by title within author. If you then sort by the modified column, it will use the modified ate as the primary sort, then by author within that, and title within that. And so on. There is a tweak to set the number of sort levels which defaults to five.

And that is exactly how I would expect the sort to work unless a mechanism like that used by calibre exists.
