Yes and no. It will probably work, but it is not a recommended thing to do.

The recommendation when wanting to downgrade is to do a factory, intercept the upgrade and put the version you want on the device. But, that loses the reading status for all the books and you need to re-add them. Downgrading to a recent firmware version will probably work. There are some versions you probably can't go to, but going from 4.5.9587 to 4.4.9344 should be OK.

What I would do is:
  1. Take the SD card out.
  2. Take a complete backup of the user partition of the device. Just copy all the files on it to somewhere on the PC.
  3. Put the firmware files for the version you want onto the device.
  4. Eject and wait for the install to happen.
  5. Test to see if everything is OK.

That should get you back to the same state you are in for the books, but running the older firmware.

If that doesn't work properly, you can try a factory reset and upgrade to the desired firmware. Then replace all the files on the user partition with the backup you took.
