Here are some reasons the lid is always down except on use:
It means someone who spatters when they wash their hands or dries off after a shower doesn't get the seat wet, very nasty for the next person whose bare bottom comes into contact and it leads to all sorts of dire thoughts.
If you drop something, it doesn't fall into the toilet water.
Pets can't drink from it.
It looks better; you don't leave drawers and cabinet doors gaping open, do you?
And finally, and the reason for the italics above, putting the lid down before flushing helps contain the germs that spew into the air at the rush of water into the bowl. Ugh, and when I think of how many people have their toothbrushes on the vanity next to the toilet! That goes in your mouth, people!
So in the name of equality and health, I implore you: Put that lid down. It's there for a reason.

So much this. Or, as I've put it...
Men: leave the seat up
Women: leave the seat down
me: put the seat AND lid down, you filthy animals
