I called Kobo support on this. It was explained to me that the
behaviour as I described was as a result of the latest firmware upgrade

Has anyone else seen anything like this?

This does not match the behavior I see on my KA1 after a power down.

On my KA1 after a reboot I am at the home screen, the book I am reading is the farthest on the left on the top row. If I have other books in progress they appear to the right of that book. Meaning it takes me one step to get to what I was reading before the power down.

I'm also fairly sure the bookcover remains in a powered down state.

This is on 4.4.9349 (the KA1 version of 4.4.9344).
