It is possible that it a hardware failure since you can't guarantee it has never been dropped or had another box on top of it.
Note, you said it was less than 2 months old and I am assuming it was shipped at some point in time or other.
Stress fractures can take a bit to show up.

I did put it in a bag, but I think I used my fingers for the task. Now, about that fly, that I did not remember

May God grant it that our paths never cross again, because if I ever catch that fly...
Now seriously. I may be very wrong, but I really wouldn't be surprised if these Kindles sold in Brazil were actually refurbished from some other country. Maybe it was just plain bad luck that mine came with this problem, but I don't know.

The battery swelled, putting just enough pressure on the back of the display to break it.
Either a bad battery or a bad battery management chip/firmware.
If you lay a straight-edge across the back, top to bottom, you can probably find that the back of the case is no longer flat.

It's unfortunate that I don't have one of those tools, because I'd like to check that. Just looking at its back I can't see anything wrong, but that's probably expected, hence you mentioning the tool.
I ended up resetting it (the line persisted, of course) and then gave Amazon a call. I was expecting to receive instructions on how to send them the device, for them to check and all, so I was very, very surprised to know that, since there's no place that fixes it in Brazil, they simply blocked the device (the access to my account that is, because the device is still working) and refunded me the whole price I paid on store credit

So I have a device that still works, and credit that I may use to buy another device (in case this one gets worse) or even books. It's like they earn so much money, something like this is not even worthy of their attention. I'm in complete awe of this system.
