For me, it happened every time and was not intermittent - putting it to sleep and waking it up multiple times never solved the issue.

It doesn't happen every time the reader is put to sleep. Putting the reader to sleep and waking up a couple of times seems to usually get it working again.
The symptoms make me suspect that the touch screen isn't waking up properly when the device is woken from sleep, as the device is otherwise responsive to the sleep button.
It is annoying, but it is intermittent enough for me at the moment to live with it for now.
