She could be being too clever for her own good. I've read that despite their reputation for being wise, owls are in general not as smart as other birds. The author may have heard that and decided to change the standard quote.

I also searched online for "doesn't have the sense that God gave" and came up with other creatures than just geese. I think it's an idiom people like to twist.
