Now I am really confused. Those images don't make sense.
Lets start from the beginning. When looking at the book list, do you see this:

The image you posted of book details tells me you should be seeing the second one.
When you tap the three dots, do you see this
or this?
I am trying to determine whether or not the box is checked.
When Night View is checked, I see this in book details. Note that all the background is black, not just the comments.
