I'm grateful for the discussion here, on two counts.
I was still running ADE 1.7 (if it ain't broke..., but it's broke), so I knew what the problem was when I tried a test download.
Very embarrassingly, I just passed along my T2 to a nephew who's computerless, so he could borrow from OverDrive. If the T2 also is broke (does anyone know?), I'll get him a Paperwhite and he can borrow books on his phone. But at least now I know to ask.
