As my father told me, it was *expected* for man to be smoking in the 60's. There even was a radio commercial back then, that had as slogan: "Het is geen man die niet roken kan." (In Dutch it rhymes. The translation is: "He who can't smoke isn't a man.")

Today, a commercial such as that one would be unthinkable. It is said that nowadays, only 15-20% of people older than 15 are smoking in the Netherlands.
