Only if the publisher is intentionally being a jerk and marks the book so that updates are NEVER sent to those who have already purchased it.

I've had many books update with new editions (even full format changes from Topaz to AZW or AZW3, to correct abysmal formatting), both fiction and nonfiction. Another I've purchased has a new edition and no amount of deleting and re-purchasing will get me the new version at Amazon (customer support and I tried, back when it was on sale, before giving up). Perhaps they have fixed this last glitch, but I suspect not (and it isn't unique to Amazon, but some others lean the other way, replacing your book with a new edition with no notice at all and when you download it, there it is (and sometimes a completely different book, as I've had a few do that, when the ASIN is re-used for a new title, which publishers should know not to do, but they do it anyway).
