I'm not afraid to wear out the Off/On switch, and I don't mind waiting a few seconds while the device boots before being able to read (but would rather not boot it several times a day. 4 to 24h before shutting down would be better, I don't know why they limit this to 1h!)).
In most cases it would be down for 8 to 15 hours per night before being all day either in use or in sleeping mode.
I guess the real question is:

If I'm not mistaken, with the current firmware, if you set this by editing the config file on the device, the next time you change settings on the screen that lists this setting, I think it resets it back to the UI defaults, and you have to edit it again. Older firmwares left it alone.

The OP did some testing in this thread, and reports that he had longer reading time between charges with auto shutdown after 30 minutes...
